At last I was able to reach the calm and peaceful thoughts of my dreams only to be woken by the crying of whistles. Stumbling to my feet awkwardly still half asleep, I do at attention to our corporal, who then informed us of the great and relieving news of our redeployment at the forward operations base 500 yards away from these mud ridden walkways in which we call our trenches. We were then commanded to collect our rifles, spare rations and whatever possessions we still possessed. As we embarked to leave the trench I could hear the guns pounding the Germans trenches as a revenge barrage for the attacks that they sent the night before. As we marched towards the operating base I could see my comrades struggle to pull the load they had, exhausted and tired from the endless days of fighting tooth and nail to defend out positions while constantly bombarded by the wailing balls of death.
