Fossil (noun)

the remains or impression of a prehistoric organism preserved in petrified form or as a mold or cast in rock.

I’m no scientist, but I know what a fossil is. I know that fossils provide evidence of organisms that lived in the past, and I know that a footprint is an example of one. I also know where Elliot’s footprints led the day he went missing. There’s a good chance I know too much.
Most people would consider the Grand Canyon a popular tourist attraction, but I see it from a different perspective. My perspective means nothing in the grand scheme of things, but if you’re really curious, I’ll tell you my side of the story.

Lewis turns his attention to the boy. “Class, this is Elliot Olivier.” Elliot’s pale face turns red with embarrassment, and he mumbles a quiet hello. His dark eyes scan our waiting faces. He slowly walks towards the back of the room and sits in the empty desk next to mine. We don’t say a word.

Elliot doodles. All the time. His math homework is always covered in designs, but never actual objects. I’ve realized his head must be as jumbled as mine, since he never draws animals or boats or people or countries. It’s always shapes and swirls and lines. I’ve never had the courage to ask him about them, about his inspiration for them, or about anything really. I’ve sat in math class beside Elliot for almost a month, and neither of us have said a word.
But today, something has to change. When Elliot sits down at his desk, I immediately open my mouth to say something. But before I can, he says, “Hey, can I borrow a pencil?”
Without saying anything, I reach into my bag and pull out a mechanical pencil. I press it into his open hand, but refuse to look at him.
“Thanks.” The word hung in the air. Another agonizing week goes by in silence.
