“Look at me my native citizens, as I go on my final journey, as I gaze upon the sunlight one last time, which I’ll never see again.”(lines 914-17) This is an example of foreshadowing Antigone’s death for the crime she committed, in which, was burying Polyneices body.
Antigone’s words, actions, and ideas contrast with Creon’s character to the point of these two characters having conflicting motivations. The conflicting motivations cause the characteristics of hatred, carelessness, and disrespect to be highlighted within Creon’s character. We can see evidence from the text when Antigone says, “Zeus did not announce these laws to me. And justice living with the gods below sent no such laws for men. I did not think anything which you proclaimed strong enough to let a mortal override the gods and their unwritten and unchanged laws.”(lines 508-513) This evidence supports my claim because this section in the play means that the God’s laws have not been changed nor set laws for man, therefore they have their own rights.
As a final point, the downfall of Creon was caused by his actions in which cause Antigone to pass, which had a domino effect, causing Creon’s family to die by killing themselves. Antigone pretty much announced that she was going to die due to her comment about going on a her final journey and never seeing sunlight again. It makes me curious as to why Creon didn’t just listen to, and take advice from the citizens that said Antigone was right about her brother Polyneices, deserving a burial. The same as her brother
