Criminal Ethics: Hurricane Matthew Assignment
As a prosecutor, one is held to a higher standard, and it is paramount that they get to live to that standard. It is common for prosecutors to have evidence that would easily set free the accused by indicating that they are innocent. However, due to competing interests often times, innocent persons are sent to jail even though there is evidence to indicate otherwise. Given this chance, I would perform my duty as a prosecutor and exonerate the accused, in light of new evidence of their innocence. This is crucial as part of the ethical standards that guide the legal system. As such, the issue of being elected in the next election should not at any one point obstruct the course of justice. One of the arguments that are brought forth in the video is with reference to the fact that, it is not clear what the correction facilities in the United States are for. Whether they are part of a correction process that is used to rehabilitate the offenders or to punish them. This is with reference to the fact that, quite a number of inmates have not committed crimes that have resulted in harming other people. Yet they are required to stay behind bars for half a decade. Young offenders have a challenge rebuilding their lives after life in prison. Outside prison, offenders are treated with the stigma which further pushes them towards a life of crime rather than being reformed and reintegrating into the society. While the prison system is considered to be a correction facility, it leaves a lot to be desired. There are some ethical issues that face the community correction staff among them racial prejudice. This is relative to the level of discrimination against some of the minority races in the United States. As such, the favored races tend to have a level of leniency. From African Americans and the Latinos, the justice system has highly targeted them. The highest population in jail is that of the African Americans and the Latinos. Even during parole, these are still the races that are mistreated. The other issue relates to the level of corruption that exists within the community correction departments. The staff in this area tends to extort the parolees for favors. This is crucial as it means that the parolees are taken advantage of, as they try to stay out of jail. As such, they can easily be manipulated by the community correctional staff. Some of the parolees will be affiliated with criminal gangs that will threaten them and their families for
