In my opinion, the most profound incident establishes the family foundation on their beliefs and values on classism, racism, and social structure at the dinner table. More importantly, it gives reasoning and understanding how the Vineyard boys redefined their family.
In this segment of the movie, it portrays the Vineyard family having a Norman Rockwell dinner. However, the scene is a stereotypical of anglo-saxon learnt classism and racism. This is based upon discriminatory opinions and misconceptions and misleading stereotypes about minorities during at the proverbial dinner table by Derek and Danny’s father, Dennis Vineyard.
During the dinner Derek describes his teacher Mr. Sweeney as a black man who is giving an exam on black literature. It is clear that Derek has a profound admiration for the educator and passion in Black History.
