Critical Response: Muslim In America Jeffery Sheler, a religious writer, authored Muslims in America. He used this short monograph to illustrate the difference between American Muslims and Muslims and also what it means to be muslim in America. He introduces this claim with three other sub claims which include: Acceptance, Diversity, and the rules proving his main claim. With the same faith, American Muslims are “more accepting of differences…than most Muslims anywhere else”(p.313). They are confronted by more modern technology and obstacles that they are compelled to do certain things that the traditional Muslims wouldn’t. For example, some modern issues they might encounter that traditional muslims wouldn’t, could be: getting a loan for a car or purchasing a house(p.314). The Five Pillars are “a declaration of belief that, ‘there is no God but Allah’ “(p.314). They pray five times a day and at certain scheduled times. They do day time feasting during the Month of Ramadan. Ramadan is practiced on the ninth month of Muslim year, in which they practice fasting from sun up to sun down. The ninth month on the islamic calendar is known as “the blessed month”. They practice charitable giving and at least one pilgrimage to Mecca. “Muslims are forbidden to consume alcohol, illicit drugs, pork, or any meat that is not halal- the islamic equivalent of kosher”(p.314). Unlike modern American Muslims, traditional Muslims are not allowed to gamble, pay or accept interest on loans or savings accounts. Traditional Muslims also are required to be covered from the wrists to the ankles. This also contrasts with some American Muslims, though some do still follow that
