The article I have chosen for discussion is, how to help your child begin developing empathy. It starts off with explaining what the meaning of empathy is, which is when you have the capability of imagining how someone else is feeling in a certain situation and respond to it with compassion and attention. It starts off by making clear that being empathic is a very complex skill to develop and if your child has empathy he has a lot of noticeable qualities. Such as, understanding he is his own individual and that others can have different feelings and opinions then he has. Describe some of the attributes of empathy.
A person who possesses empathy can understand his self-worth and individuality, also be able to recognize others may have different viewpoints or opinions then he does and accepting it. Also understands the concept of different emotions and having the ability to imagine how someone else can be feeling in a time of despair or relating it to how oneself may feel in that situation and figuring the right way to comfort them when the need arises.
2. Name some of the social-emotional milestones that foster the development of empathy.
Some social-emotional skills that can foster the development of empathy is firstly, a parent having a good healthy relationship with the child, this in turn helps the child learn to accept and understand others. Also, the idea of social referencing is introduced during the 6 months period where a child will look to the parent’s reactions to certain situation and people and this helps a baby understand the world around them. This goes to show that although her parents may never get over this horrible experience it shows that so many peoples support can lead to a positive end and justice for their little girl may lessen their sorrow. My opinion on the article is it gives a good insight on how to put your kids in the right direction of having feelings and being able to be empathetic towards others because it will make them better individuals in the future. It will raise children to become a benefit to society and the people around them as well as to themselves and their own mental health.
