A person who possesses empathy can understand his self-worth and individuality, also be able to recognize others may have different viewpoints or opinions then he does and accepting it. Also understands the concept of different emotions and having the ability to imagine how someone else can be feeling in a time of despair or relating it to how oneself may feel in that situation and figuring the right way to comfort them when the need arises.

Some social-emotional skills that can foster the development of empathy is firstly, a parent having a good healthy relationship with the child, this in turn helps the child learn to accept and understand others.
