My immersion days were a success, I felt more comfortable in my patient care and my confidence has improved. I successful took care of two critically ill patients each of the four days and completed my task on time as expected of me. I felt prepared to work as a nurse without a preceptor watching over me. I communicated therapeutically both with my patient and the family and gave them a rundown of what is being done and what is the next plan of care for the patient. I had the opportunity to care for a patient who coded twice and had a balloon pump placed with the help of my preceptor. I read the protocol for taken caring hypothermic patient prior to the arrival of the patient on the unit because the patient core body temperature need to lower to 32 degrees to help decrease the patient body metabolism. …show more content…
I felt part of the nursing team at the ICU because I was able to delegate task such as accu checks, temperature taken and input and output checking to the unlicensed assisting personnel on the unit. I call the Doctors and reported changes or critical laboratory values of my patient and gave my opinion on what I thought the problem was and suggested a solution to the problem. Example is when I called the doctor to clarify an order for an IV fluid when my patient is diagnosed with fluid overload that is affecting his heart. The patient was receiving a large dose of Furosemide to get rid of the fluid; the doctor wrote an order to discontinue the fluids. I am very pleased to be given this opportunity because it helped decrease my anxiety of working after graduation and made me aware that I knew more than I thought I
