Placing The Article In The Wider Debate
Mintzberg (1984, pp. 68) argues how “strategies need not be deliberate – they can also emerge”. In contrast Christienson & Donovan (2000) proposed two processes of strategy formulation the Intended Strategy and the emergent strategy, which combined, would produce actual strategy. Yet they both evaluate the case study of Hondas Attack on the American Motorcycle Market and Mitzberg (1984, pp. 70) concluded that ‘They did only one thing right: they learned, first hand. However, Christienson & Donovan (2000) conclude that Honda began with an intended strategy and then saw that a different winning strategy emerged once this was evident, Honda then switch strategy again and a successful indented strategy process was executed. Christienson & Donovan (2000) would argue that there was no evidence of emerging strategy to be successful alone on the Honda case.
