Crooks states to George in chapter 4, “‘I tol’ em but they come in anyways.” “I didn’t care much” Said Crooks. “Lennie’s a nice fella’” (Steinbeck 82). This indicates that Crooks reveals that he doesn’t care if people are in his room once he gets to know them. It also indicates that Crooks enjoys the company from time to time so he has someone to talk to and he doesn’t have to read boring books all day. Crooks explains to Lennie in chapter 4, “‘You’re nuts,’ Said Crooks, ‘I don’t blame the guy you travel around with for keepin you outta sight” (Steinbeck 69). This detail shows that Crooks hasn’t seen anyone achieve their goal of getting land and having a house. Everyone that said that they were going to get land and live on their own either quit or got rid of that dream because they realized that it wasn’t possible at that time period.
