Crossroads Missions: Movie Analysis

The Appalachian Region is something very near, and dear to my heart. I am very familiar with the struggles these people face, and have seen it firsthand on several different occasions. For starters, my brother-in-law is from Harlan which was even spoken of in this video. He faced many of the same difficulties people in the documentary faced such as drug issues within his family and lack of food. He, like Shawn Grant, tried to escape this by moving away from home, which is when he moved into my house and was able to finish school and start his own business. Another connection I have is through my internship with Crossroads Missions, they have a base in Pikeville, Kentucky, that does community outreaches and helps to build, and repair, homes for …show more content…
However, one major cultural difference in my area is the type of jobs people can find. In the areas discussed, when students were unable to find work they often go into the mining business, whereas in my community, students enlist in the military. It is hard to find a job in a small town, without many opportunities, and lack of education. Therefore, one thing I thing would better this area, is creating more job opportunities, and making it easier for students to afford college. Also, in these areas where drugs are present, ample people live off of welfare. I believe that if the state required drug screening in order to receive government aid that people would be less likely to do them. Lastly, several people in the video mentioned the inability to afford food. If the government did not allow soda to be purchased on food stamps, these people would have more money for food. It would also fix the situation dealing with lack of teeth and allow for overall healthier
