Cruelty is one of the major factors in the work 1984. Because of the totalitarian government, Big Brother and The Party wish for nothing less than complete and utter power. This power can only be achieved by one way: torture. The text explicitly states this by saying, “’How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?” Winston thought. ‘By making him suffer,’ he said” Especially in this piece of work, cruelty is the gateway to power.
