Cruelty In Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown

In the short story Young Goodman Brown, Brown considers himself to be an innocent Christian. He shows both innocence and corruptibility as he is hesitate, between believing in people being born good and believing that the devil has taken over the minds of the people Brown loves. Brown thought he could resist Satan and the tactics of Satan that is used to corrupt Brown. Brown thought he could resist Satan, because Brown believes in the goodness in everyone he loves. He even states about his wife, “ … she’s a blessed angel on earth…” (3). Brown’s strong belief in being a strong, innocent Christian and the belief in everyone he knows being good. Faith, Brown’s wife, wants him to stay the night instead of Brown leaving and going into the woods.
