Lit Analysis In literature the common story of a fairy tale ending with an absence of moral struggle had created a deficit in many young readers minds, but Huck Finn strongly demonstrates that cruelty begets cruelty and kindness begets kindness throughout the book such as when the King and Duke ultimately are destroyed for their trickery, and when Jim is saved for his Kindness, along with the Shepherdsons and Grangerfords who ultimately destroy each other. Thus creating a morally building piece with a compelling and interesting story. One of the most compelling pieces of evidence for cruelty begets cruelty was the war that the Sheperdsons and Grangerfords waged against each other due to one petty event. Each family ultimately was destroyed by their hateful differences on Pg. 179 just as they lived in them. The other side of the claim states kindness begets kindness, which is also very well illustrated in the book like when Jim helps the Doc save Tom's life. During the few last chapters of the book as Huck and Tom have rescued Jim, Tom is mortally wounded when escaping and they kidnap a doctor to try and help him but due to Tom's hallucination state the doctor cannot do much to help him. When Jim sees this, he steps out of hiding to help the doctor save Tom. Due to doing this, Jim is recaptured, but when the angry mob is ready to kill Jim, the doctor advocates for Jim's life because of his heroic help in saving Tom's life, which ultimately saves Jim. This perfectly shows that eventually what goes around comes around because Jims compassion, the Doc on Pg 349 felt so inclined to do the same just as Sophocles stated “For kindness begets kindness evermore”. The third piece of evidence echoes the idea of the beginning: that cruelty begets cruelty, but many folks find it to happen more than kindness begets
