The Motive of Christianity

The primary motivation of the Crusades was not a religious one, but instead was revenge through violence because they fought to avenge the slaughtered Christians, recapture Jerusalem, and to fight in battle to relieve their sins.

During this time period however, religion was very important to Christians and they believed they should defend it with their life. The Crusades enabled men with different intentions to fight for their holy land. In contrast, document one states from the view of a hostile crusader after their defeat. He states that it was foolish to fight and that men would fight just to relieve poverty, while also being killed. In document two and four, they state facts about how they should avenge their brothers and Jesus by fighting the Muslims. In document eleven, it is written by Count Stephen of Blois and is a letter home to his wife because he is going fight and lead the exhibition. They seeked help from the Franks, who were very disrespectful towards their values. Documents nine and six pertained to Anna Comnena and her views on the Franks. She states that they would disregard their customs and truces for no certain reason. In document nine, it begins to talk about the journey towards Jerusalem and how thousands of men of all classes followed one another to reach their goal. However it seemed unsuccessful because citizens returned scared and wounded by the Arabs.
