Course Description
This course provides a basic introduction to personal computing. Through the use of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on experience, the student will be introduced to microcomputer hardware, operating systems, and several software applications. The Internet, internet safety, and internet-based applications are also covered. A keyboarding component is included.
Expected Student Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
Identify basic components of a typical microcomputer system.
Navigate the desktop and have a basic understanding of an operating system.
Describe the use of various production software applications (word processors, spreadsheets, presentation and databases).
Set up an email account, compose, send and receive emails with attachments.
Identify and explain different web-browsers, ISP (Internet service providers), and internet-based applications (ITunes, Facebook).
Demonstrate keyboarding skills at 25 wpm with 93% accuracy.

Reading/Videos- It is very important read the assigned material and watch any videos in order to successfully complete coursework. You cannot rely on classroom lectures/demonstrations as the sole source of information.
Project/Assignments- Each Unit has an associated homework assignment. We will cover the skills necessary for each homework project during class time.
Quizzes- Each Unit has a multiple-choice quiz that will be taken in Blackboard.
Exams- You will have the opportunity to test out of this class by passing the Digital Literacy exam on your first attempt. If you don’t pass the exam at the beginning of the course, you will take it again at the end as your Final Exam.
Late Work- Work may be submitted at any time during a unit. It is highly advisable to complete the work before the assigned due date to avoid being late or to anticipate accommodating unforeseen circumstances. Due to the fast-paced nature of the course, and my commitment to communication and timely grading and feedback, I do not accept work past the assigned due date. On very rare occasion, and solely at my discretion, an extension may be granted for things such as Military activities or medical emergencies. In the event of an extension, a supplemental project on Time Management may be assigned.
