Abigail Stoetzner Tollett English Honors 10 7 March 2024 Cries from a Cuckoo’s Nest: “Birds Aren’t Real!” Some people argue that the chicken came before the egg, while others assert the egg preceded the chicken. However, a more intriguing argument suggests that the existence of chickens is a government lie. Doubting the government’s intentions is not uncommon; some are more skeptical of its benevolence than others, and those who harbor greater skepticism may resort to conspiracy theories to validate their beliefs. Conspiracy theories are prevalent because they offer an accessible means for individuals to comprehend the world. It’s not beyond the CIA to concoct outlandish plots for the sake of their own interests. Examples of absurd schemes have ranged from using inflatable sex dolls as body swaps to mislead Soviets, commissioning toy companies to make unsettling action figures of Osama Bin Laden to discourage children from sympathizing with him in any way, and concocting poisonous toothpaste to assassinate Patrice Lumumba (Howell; Goldman; Davies). The CIA has also executed more sinister, yet still notably ludicrous plots such as MK-Ultra, which aimed to brainwash or reprogram American citizens who expressed sympathy for communist ideals via electro-shock therapy, radiation, or subjugation to a variety of drugs, toxins, and chemicals (Nofil). To an extent, it may be logical to conclude one, that the US government’s actions are based more on its own interests than its citizens’ interests, and two, that the absurdity of Birds Aren’t Real’s explanation can be waived because the degree of insanity of the BAR Movement’s explanation could be considered consistent with the degree of insanity observed in official, past CIA …show more content…
