Culture Awareness: Venezuela United States established diplomatic relationships with Venezuela after the withdrawal from the Colombian federation in 1830, and maintained a generally close relationship throughout most of our history. However, the U.S. and Venezuela bilateral relationship has been tense in recent years due to a range of ideologies differences. These tensions are based on significant differences of analysis, opinion, and policies. The U.S. Government nonetheless believes both countries would be better served by establishing a functional and productive relationship focusing on areas of mutual interest, including counternarcotics, counterterrorism, commerce, and energy (state.gov).

Currently countries such as Brazil have assumed a greater and a leading role in the area and in the coming years Venezuela’s role will likely diminish because of significant foreign policies and domestic challenges. Since becoming a democracy in 1958, Venezuela has sought to strong relations with other Latin American countries, as well as with several states that belong to the OPEC and the United States. While the Venezuelan government has continued to seek strong relations with Latin American and OPEC Countries under the United Socialist Party of Venezuela leadership, relations with the United States have deteriorated. In addition, the Venezuelan government has promoted a Third World ideology that encourages the development of a multi role world and an anti U.S. policies. This has led Venezuela to consolidate relations with Latin American countries and especially leftist regional allies, including Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua as well as with several authoritarian countries
