“Da de Los Muertos,” or the Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday to acknowledge and honor loved ones who have passed away. This holiday coincides more with Catholicism, where other Catholic holidays take place around the same time. The true meaning is the belief that the spirits of the deceased return and live on Earth, so instead of fearing death, it is embraced as something that is a part of the natural human experience. I chose this unique holiday because even though I am Mexican we lean more towards Christianity and never celebrated Da de Los Muerto. I have always looked at it as such a meaningful way to bring joy and celebration to the cycle of life with family and communities coming together in a spirited way.

As mentioned above, this deeply cultural holiday that is celebrated does not all occur in one day. Day of the Dead normally takes place on November 1st and 2nd, but to prepare for this event, events leading up to the unique day take place way prior. Furthermore, altars are created in the family homes in replacement of graves for their loved ones. The altars are covered with offerings, such as photos, candles, food, personal belongings, and more all relating to the departed.
