My greatest asset as a leader is my ability to build positive, inclusive relationships that help people feel supported and empowered. It is my utmost priority in any leadership situation to build a culture of care and inclusion so people feel supported enough to take risks. Especially in Greek life, it is important to me that every member feels valued in this space, regardless of her background.

Last spring, I became Dance Marathon Chair for my chapter, and faced an immediate dilemma. My chapter’s Dance Marathon team has been historically small, rarely hitting more than thirty participants. However, as much as I wanted to build numbers, I knew that Dance Marathon can be inherently exclusive due to the physical and mental exertion it requires.

When a non-affiliated student sees another student in letters walking down Sheridan road, what do you think they see? Do they see the Panhellenic Association, Interfraternity Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, or Multicultural Greek Council? Do they see our shared values, our support systems, and our passion for philanthropy? Or do they see the exclusive culture of superiority that led to the horrific death of a boy from Penn State due to hazing? Or the party culture that led to the incident with SAE last winter and the many cases of sexual assault that go unreported campus wide?

When we all decided to join sororities, we did so because we saw opportunities for sisterhood, philanthropy, leadership, and the other values that our chapters hold dear. When I look at how the Panhellenic Association on our campus has addressed issues of exclusivity, rape culture, alcohol abuse and other issues, especially compared to other universities, I am very proud of the progress that has been made, but that does not in any way diminish the fact that these issues still exist to a very large extent. The Northwestern Panhellenic Association is privileged to have twelve chapters teeming with motivated, passionate women who are ready to make the changes to improve this system, and it is the job of the Executive Board to take advantage of this

We say we value sisterhood, so it is the Panhellenic Association’s role to create an inclusive and supportive environment within the Northwestern community where women can find sisters who share their values and support their endeavors. We say we value philanthropy, so it is our role to be models in giving back to the Northwestern community and beyond.
