Mary Inks’ wrote an essay “Dancing Through the Learning Process” on her experiences of the learning process. She uses a dance metaphor. In her essay, she mentions three main steps: Imitation through observation, Formal Instruction, and Experimenting. This essay will be a comparison essay to Inks’ process of learning how to dance, to mine, learning how to play basketball. Basketball and dancing have many differences but the process of learning is similar therefore Inks’ is logical.
Back when I was growing up, basketball was a family tradition sport. My grandparents played, my parents and their siblings played, so, it was not an unusual sport. I’ve seen videos of my family playing basketball and read newspaper clippings. I used to even watch my dad and his marines play basketball every Friday night at the local gym on base. Basketball was something I enjoyed watching, that’s where my interest of the sport came from, observation.
First step to the learning process according to Inks' essay is imitation through observation. Imitation through observation is pretty much where the interest begins to occur.
