The Dodge family arrived in the Massachusetts in 1629. But in the 1830’s Ezekiel Dodge moved from Massachusetts to Michigan where he worked on boats. He and his wife Anna had two daughters and eleven sons. One of Ezekiel’s sons was Daniel Rugg who eventually took over the family business of building and repairing boat engines. Daniel Rugg had two children before his wife died around 1855. After she died Daniel married Maria Duval Casto and they had three children. Della the Dodge bothers older sister was born in 1863, John Francis the older of the two bothers was born in 1864, and Horace in 1868. Both John and Horace spent many hours at their father's side helping him, and learning the trade of a machinist. John was quieter out of the two brothers and he was also the better machinists. Horace on the other hand was leader and financier. Even though they had their differences the two were inseparable there whole life. As they got older both of the Dodge were hired by Murphy Iron Works at the age of 20 and 22. they work there for 10 years until Horace created a dirt-proof ball bearing which he made at his home in Detroit. Horace shared credit with his brother on the patent. the next year the two brothers opened a bicycle shop with Fred S. After some time the brothers sold their share of the bicycle shop. And opened their own business manufacturing automobile parts and selling them to various manufacture. Dodge’s high quality parts led to a contract with Ransom Eli Olds founder of the Oldsmobile, and the first manufacture in the automobile industry to use a assembly line to produce cars.
