This part of the assessment, I needed to critique a movie made by Hollywood about volcanoes. I chose Dante’s Peak by the Director Roger Donaldson and it starred Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton and Jamie Renee Smith. According to IMDB (2017) Dante’s Peak is about a volcanologist Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) arrives to a countryside town which is the second most desirable place to live in America, who discovers a dormant volcano Dante’s Peak is ready to erupt any moment. By reading this description I can see some errors in the movie already, from my understanding of volcanoes. First of when a volcano is dormant it means it has not erupted for over 10, 000 years which is extinct. How can a volcano which has been termed extinct, become alive and…show more content… There was a scene when a young couple were swimming in the hot springs of the volcano and all of a sudden it exploded without any warning. When the volcano exploded it was like blasting tiny ashes exploding all over the place. During the movie, Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) investigates the eruption in Dante’s Peak which harmed the young couple. While upon Dante’s Peak he measures the temperature of the volcano magma chamber and he discovered the horrific news that his volcano is going to erupt within 24 hours. I had an issue with this part of the movie, as he only used one method of measurement to predict if there was an eruption going to occur, normally scientists use many methods to predict an eruptions and could not tell as fast as Harry did on the first go. Also, he wouldn’t know the actual time frame of a volcano was going to erupt only within days, weeks not hours. Upon this discovery Harry informs the mayor Rachel Wando (Linda Hamilton) that the dormant volcano which hasn’t erupted for over 10,000 years is going to erupt within the day. Rachel believes Harry’s discoveries and goes to notify her office and the town people that this volcano is going to erupt and they need to evacuate. The town’s people did not believe her and didn’t want to leave their belongings and house, but ultimately they did evacuate all but her children.
