Youth need strong, influential leaders, so they have someone they can talk to when they need support. The Jefferson Award is an award for someone who goes out of their way to help someone in need. The person of merit is Derrick Meyer. He is a teacher at Amery High School, and also leads the Veterinarian Science Team at Future Farmers of America (FFA). Derrick Meyer deserves the Jefferson Award because he challenges his students and he is patient with everyone he teaches. They also don’t ignore or bore high achievers. They have high expectations, are highly motivated, and believe in all of their students.” (“What Makes A Good Teacher?,” 2024). This shows why the quality of challenging their students is important for a teacher to have. An example is, when Darrick Meyer challenged me, he had us all do the vet wrap cause I had never done it on a dog before. So it was a little hard to do, but he was patient and waited for me to do it right. This proves that Darrick Meyer does challenge his students. Furthermore, Kyielgh Anderson Kyielgh, a student, said, “He has you do the things that he is explaining. He has you do it physically like when he had us practicing vet wraps and feeling the heart of a dog. When you have never done any of that before.” This suggests that Darrick Meyer is challenging his students. There are long-term effects of Darrick Meyer’s characteristics on the youth. It may affect the attitude youth have about the subject or the relationships that they have. Because they have a positive role model that makes them want to do good things and help other people.
