Marc Stein refers to the lack of representation of people of color, the working-class and members of rural communities in the homophile movement. It was "predominantly white, middle class and Christian" (56). I would like to examine race and class within Daughters of Bilitis, a lesbian rights organization. As stated by Stein, the organization was founded by a Rose Bamberger, a Filipina, along with her partner and other lesbians (55). The working class couples--some of whom were women of colour--left as the white, middle class couples changed the direction of DOB from a response to lesbian bar culture to political activism on lesbianism (56).
