Based on a true story of his childhood, Dave Pelzer wrote a bestselling sequel called The Lost Boy. Everywhere Dave goes, misfortune follows. Throughout the story, Dave seemed like he just can’t get out of trouble and the mischief he causes was so serious that it sometimes involves the police. I found Dave to be a very inspirational character in this book because of his ability to persevere. No matter how hard life was for him, Dave never gave up. Unlike many people, Dave didn’t have a real family. The introduction of the book only gave us a small glimpse of what his mother was like. Dave’s experiences with his mother had involved loads of violence and controversy that most nine year olds are incapable of enduring. His alcoholic mother had been abusing Dave until he was nine years old, when he was finally able to escape his mother’s clutches. Dave Pelzer spent nine horrific years with his abusive mother and even after he left home, his mother was still trying to take him down. Every chance there was, Dave’s mother would attempt to put Dave into a mental institution. At the same time, Dave was moving from one foster home to another, meeting new and temporary parents. I found it very difficult to relate to Dave because of the dramatic differences in our lives. Changing schools would already be a big deal to me.
