David Barkley was also known as David B. Barkeley Cantu. David Barkley had many achievements in his life time, and after his lifetime. He was in the United States Army from 1917 to 1918. He had to grow up fast after his dad abandoned the family. (WWW.tshaonline.org)
David was born in Laredo, Texas on March 31, 1899. In 1904 after the birth of David’s sister, Amelia, and his dad being stationed in San Antonio, Texas the whole family moved to San Antonio, Texas. (WWW.tshaonline.org)
David’s dad Josef Barkley is a Mexican American that was native to south Texas. After his family and him moved to San Antonio, Texas he abandoned them. David did not want to be seen as Mexican decent in fear that he would never see any up front combat. So he joined under his father’s name, so he would not be put in a non-combat unit. (WWW.wikipedia.org)
David was assigned to company A 356th infantry, eighty-ninth division. While overseas he was given the mission to swim across the Meuse River near the Pouilly to gather information. He swam with another soldier who had also volunteered. When they were returning with the information David had gotten cramps and drowned. The other solder mad it across to give the information.
