David W. Blight’s primary argument is as Fredrick Douglas put it “is a war between men of thought.” It is what one man thinks of another, what ones belief is versus the others. He analyzes the meaning behind the Civil War. African Americans played a key role in the war. Even with the emancipation proclamation signed and blacks free, African Americans still face an uphill battle to equality. It is sometimes hard to believe that in just a few hundred years blacks have went through so much hardship. Even today there are still issues of race and equality. Blight does a good job of hitting on the moral compass of his readers, and the meaning of war.
Blight helps to prove his argument in the telling of the civil war and the role of black soldiers.
