In David Brooks’ article on Clemantine Wamariya and her older sister Claire’s survival through the genocide in Rwanda in 1988, he discovers through their life story the importance of appreciating the small things. The moral of the story is to be courageous and be optimistic. By the end of the article, the audience is effectively left feeling lighter and overall, grateful. Brooks’ retelling of how they were able to find the light while in the dark and come out on the other side is clearly used to teach the audience they can do the same.
