In The New York Times article “The Cop Mind,” former police reporter and current author David Brooks accounts his personal experiences in the field. Brooks makes it a point that while certain acts of police brutality are of no excuse, many fail to realize the overall emotional and psychological toll that comes with being a cop. Brooks continues by detailing the vast array of qualities that most police officers embody: dedication, diligence and wisdom to name a few. He states that they “ride an emotional and biochemical roller coaster” which, in return, plays a large role in their ability to perceive society. When surrounded by crime all day every day, the cops often times become “hypervigilant,” according to Brooks. To manage, the officers
