David Oshinsky’s “Worse than slavery” in chapter 1 shows how black people were kept in slave-like conditions. The part where the well-dressed couple comes on board and the captain makes remarks to them saying, “Get of this boat”, “God damn your soul”. The passengers also make remarks to them saying “Kick the nigger!”, “He ought to be hung!”, “He ought to have his neck broke!”. The couple has no choice but to sit down and wait for the next steamer. Because of their skin color the captain did not allow them on the boat and even said no other boat would take them.
