Cultures around the world are different in many ways. There are similarities and differences between many cultures. David is a 12-year-old boy that was raised in a Russian Communist Concentration Camp. A guard in the concentration camp has helped David escape and now David is on his own. David is now figuring out what the world is like outside of the camp. Many things in the concentration camp are different from the things outside of the concentrations camp like his family unit, religion and food.

After escaping the concentration camp, David traveled a lot and would tell people that he was with the circus and got left behind, so now he is trying to catch up to them. “David was very careful what he said about the circus now” (168). Along the way, David saved a girl from a fire, and to show their appreciation, the girl’s parents offered David a place to stay. The boys did not understand what it would be like not to bathe everyday. “David thought living in a house was very difficult. It was not the house itself - that was lovely to be in -but the people” (131). Since David doesn’t know who he really is, the family he was staying with believes that he is a liar.
