Kai Wisher Keith Higbee Dystopian Lit 11 June 2024 TOWSAF Persuasive Essay The ones who stayed and fought is about the people and environment in the city of Um-Helat. The city is located on the migration path of butterflies and hummingbirds, and every year the community celebrates their migration during the “Day of Good Birds” where the kids dress up wearing wings and jump around. For those who can’t jump, they are given drones so they can fly around and join the other kids. This celebration is just the beginning of the community, symbolizing more of a utopian story than a dystopian story by treating everyone equal, and bringing them all together, instead of a dark, war-like theme in the story. This doesn’t align with my claim of the story being more utopian because even though a man was killed, the community knew it was for a good reason, which shows how trusting everyone in the community is with each other no matter what happens. Another possible example of dystopian would be “‘I’ll get back at you,” she says between sobs. “I’ll make you die the way you made him die.’” (Jemisin, “The ones who stay and fight”). Even though this could be thought dystopian, it is just one person who is upset, not the whole community. In conclusion, “the ones who stay and fight” is more utopian than dystopian because the community sticks together and works together. They are all supportive and understanding of each other, like being open minded and kind to everyone, celebrating the farmers, and sticking together when disaster strikes. I believe the moral of the story is to be kind to everyone because they could become some of your biggest supporters and
