To begin, symbolism was shown a lot throughout both of these poems, with various similarities and differences regarding this element of literary. In the poem “Daystar”, the general symbol would be of a woman who is strong, but slowly shutting down, because she has no more vitality inside her left. “So she lugged a chair behind the garage” is one example from line four of the text illustrating and stating the overall symbol of this poem. As the author of this poem clearly confirms that the lack of strength left in this mother is mostly lethargy. The poet Linda Pastan, wrote about how panicked and worried the parents were for her child in the act of getting injured, in the quotation of saying “I kept waiting for a thud of crash”. However, the daughter continues to ride her bicycle independently, “screaming with laughter”. The deeper meaning to this demonstrates that as life goes by she will have to go through life more independently, even if her parents are worried about her safely and the dangers in the real world, but also to the parents of this daughter who found it to be very joyful. In the first story, a lot of the symbolism was towards the mother who is taking care of her children, whereas the second poem showed a lot of symbolism concerning the child who was in the process of starting this independent lifestyle where the parents didn’t have to take a lot of responsibility for. However, the symbolism shown in the second poem called “To a Daughter Leaving Home” could compare a lot to the first, because a lot of the deeper meanings towards the context of the poem was in the sense to care for their kids.
