The dazzle paint represents a shield for Jack. He uses it to hide his insecurities from everybody else, he states to the boys, “You know, dazzle paints. Like things trying to look like something else.like moths on a tree trunk” (63). A moth is a vulnerable animal, but because of its camouflage colors it is able to blend in with the tree and go unnoticed. Just like a moth, Jack wants to be seen as a strong, fearless leader who isn’t afraid to kill, to obtain this image he uses the face paint. Jack doesn’t want to be seen as vulnerable, so he uses the face paint to hide it. The dazzle paint also adds a sense of fear to his appearance.
