The Mayflower Compact was a document signed aboard the English ship Mayflower in November of 1620. The passengers travelling on the vessel were Separatists, also called Puritans and Pilgrims, who were seeking a free land of religious tolerance. They had previously moved from England to Holland and experienced religious liberty. However, they did not appreciate the way their children were adopting Dutch culture so they decided to settle new lands. The Pilgrims were led by William Bradford who had organized their voyage and would become the governor of the Plymouth colony for three decades.
