There are three important characters worthy of mention. The first is Bryce, he’s fourteen, in eighth grade, plays baseball, loves to write, and solve mysteries. The second character is Bryce’s sister or twin Ashley. Ashley is also in eighth grade, loves to write, hang out with friends and solve mysteries. The third is Mr. Patterson, he is the school janitor who helps Ashley find out her secret admirer, and also gets held hostage with Bryce. All the characters are very intertwined and work together through the story.
The book starts out in Red Rock where Bryce and Ashley are cleaning out a basement for community service. As Bryce and Ashley are cleaning, they discover ten wallets hidden in the ceiling. Bryce and Ashley love a good mystery so they decided that they had to figure out who they belonged to. Bryce and Ashley discover the wallets belonged to soldiers who served in World War 2 and must’ve been stolen. Inside one of the wallets is a letter that had never been opened so Bryce goes to work to see who it belonged to and if they were still alive. …show more content…
Bryce opens the letter to discover it’s a love note written to a soldier by his girlfriend saying when he comes home she wants to marry him. Bryce and Ashley are both entering a writing contest for their school, and Bryce decides to use the letter in his story. While Bryce continues to write a love story Ashley has bigger problems, her secret admirer. Ashley continues to receive flowers, cards, and balloons, but her admirer won't show his face and she's worried about the dance quickly approaching if she’ll even want to go with him.
