H.R.913 : Everglades for the Next Generation Act

POS 2014: American Federal Government

Brandon Wardlaw

March 13, 2013

Dear Congressman Alcee Hastings:
I am writing you today because of my concern for the Everglades and my support of the Everglades for the Next Generation Act. The Everglades is truly a unique ecosystem that is of great ecological value. Due to the dramatic changes that have occurred in south Florida over the past century, a restoration is definitely needed.
I have spent time researching this issue and have found that I am definitely not alone in my concerns. Water quality is a major issue in the Everglades, because of the influx of nitrogen and phosphorus from agricultural lands. High phosphorus inflows are the primary concern in most of the Everglades, but excess nitrogen combined with hyper salinity due to decreased freshwater flows through the southern Everglades may be problematical.
The Everglades are a habitat for a large biodiversity and offer nursery grounds for many organisms. If we were to lose them, the cost of water filtration and pollution control would be extremely immense and sensitive key organisms such as coral reefs would die. The water would become murky with extra sediment and salinity levels would kill off host species and organisms. Also, human pollution from natural chemicals and human waste would not be filtered and would eventually make its way into open water further throwing off balance and causing suffrage to Florida’s seafood industry.
I realize that restoration or even just preventing further degradation is an enormous challenge but the future of these treasured ecosystems thus depends on Everglades’ restoration. I would like to thank you for your time and ask for your support and response in what I think is a very important issue for not only our state but also for the rest of our country in which we live.
Your constituent,
Brandon Wardlaw

Evaluation

I learned a lot of things when researching this topic. I knew several facts about the Everglades, which is one reason I was so interested in doing my assignment on this bill. However, I never really saw it from an ecological point of view. I learned so much more about the ecosystems there and how precious they are to keeping many things in balance. I also never considered the
