Death is an important theme in Hamlet. Death appears to Hamlet when he is confronted with the untimely death of his father, then he contemplates death in the form of suicide. His preoccupation with thinking about death, suicide and the afterlife makes him feel lost, isolated, and hopeless. The tragedy in Hamlet by William Shakespeare results primarily from Hamlet’s contemplation and feelings of suicide Soon after seeing his father’s ghost, he is constantly contemplating his revenge. Hamlet weighs the advantages of leaving his miserable life with the living, for the possibility of a better but unknown life. Hamlet realizes that murder is a very serious act, an act for which he could potentially be punished for treason with death, which drives him to seriously consider suicide. It is shown in this quote from Hamlet’s soliloquy. “The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely. The pangs of despised love, the law's delay, the insolence of office and the purns. That patient merit of th’unworthy takes” (III,i,71-74). This quote shows suicide condemns someone to hell which worries Hamlet and why he is so torn in his decision to seek his father's revenge.
