May 20, 2018 No Specific Normal Visiting new places or speaking to new people can sometimes be scary to experience. There is no way to know if the experience will be a positive one based on the scenery or how the locals might welcome you. Many times, the people and the location are not what makes visitors nervous but rather if the way they communicate will be understood or vice-versa. Tourists face this issue when visiting other countries, but also when visiting another state where the language is the same but somehow they can be misunderstood by the locals. Many times, people can forget that your accent might not matter but rather the facial expression or tone you use can either make a good or bad impression. Deborah Tannen’s “New York Style” PBS, should be required for a college level language exploration because it offers insight into a normal conversation being perceived based on tone, facial expressions, and response. She gives a perspective that in several conversational situations, many people perceive as normal and polite if has lots of commentary or emotions. Tannen opens our mind to see the “normal” of other people while helping us understand how to adapt to the settings we find ourselves in and possibly getting out of our norm or comfort zone. By reading this, college students can learn the importance that their tone, facial expression, and response can have on the impression their listeners can create of them. This can be helpful by showing them to be flexible for situations faced in their social, academic, and even their professional lives by showing them that this flexibility can prevent misunderstandings and create more efficient
