“The most fundamental concept of democracy is the idea that government exists to secure the rights of the people and must be based on the consent of the governed…” (Document C). The government’s purpose is to protect the rights of the citizens, and therefore, the people choose their leader, the President of the United States. Most of the time the people are satisfied with their choices of government. However, if the president does not do his job as promised, the people have the right to protest. Protest happen, not just in the United States, but all around the world. In 1989, Chinese students protested against their government, but were killed for it (Document C). That is because China does not give the citizens the right to go against their government. In my opinion, I appreciate that I am able to vote for who I believe would be best for our country. Five delegates were chosen to write an explanation on why they wanted to separate from Great Britain. This document was called the Declaration of Independence (BGE). Within this document, Thomas Jefferson listed the natural rights that the people should have, which include equality, life, liberty, pursuit of happiness, and the right to vote and protest. When the document was created, these ideals were viewed as the foundation of the society. Today, even through the constant changes, the citizen of the United States still live by these
