More than simply being blood related. No, that is too simple. If you want the real definition of a family, more than the dictionary definition, you need to look further. Families push each other to succeed. They care for each other. Love always has to be present in a real family. Maybe, the son has a nice neighbor or really close friend, someone who actually cares and pays attention, someone that actually pushes the kid to succeed. I would say that person is more of a family member than the ¨family¨ my dictionary describes. A real family requires love and caring. The saying ¨blood is thicker than water¨ is not always true. A real family member cares, they actively like to spend time with other family members. A real family member supports the other people.
