What is the Degenerative Communication Spiral?
Degenerative communication spiral is defined as “mirror images of generative spirals: the process is identical but the results are opposite” (Stewart, 2012 p. 403), in this type of spirals “misunderstandings and discord create more relationship damage” (Stewart, 2012 p. 403). I have like most been identified by others as many things in my life some good, some bad but I am secure in who I am and how I see myself that it does not much bother me how others identify me. Queendom describes me as insightful as I seem to know that if I do this then that will happen. So if I act a certain way then I would be identified as this or that by others even though that is not how I would see my actions or behavior. We have a new neighbor here named Janet, and she doesn’t cook, Lord love her she actually burnt water a couple of days ago and set off her smoke alarm, but on occasion I send food up to her and her husband and she gushes constantly how nice and sweet I am and goes on and on, that is how she identified me. However, I have repeatedly told her to please stop that because she is going to ruin my reputation, because I have been known to be mean and hateful she just has not seen that ‘pretty’ side of me to this point.
