Between 1933 and 1945, more than 11 million men, women, and children were murdered in the Holocaust. Approximately six million of these were Jews. The minorities of society fell victimized to dehumanization at the cruel hands of the SS guards and the inhumane camps, where they were held captive for what seemed like endless periods of time. These methods of dehumanization helped Hitler achieve his ends.
As we’ve seen, Hitler made the Jews shave their heads. In the book Night it states “I let myself be dragged along to the barbers. In the book it says, “Our backyard looked like a market place. Valuable objects, precious rugs, silver candle sticks, Bibles and other ritual objects were strewn over the dusty-pit full relics that seemed to never have a home. All of this under a magnificent blue sky.” (15). Everything in this quote states that the Hungarian police took all of their valuables and piled them us so Hitler can have them. Another thing Hitler did was taking their names away. Instead of names they got numbers. “In the afternoon they made us line up. Three prisoners brought a table and medical instruments. We were told to roll up our sleeves and file past the table. The tree “veteran” prisoners, needles in hand tattooed numbers on our arms. I became A-7713. From now on, I had no other name.”
