Don't Judge a Book by its Cover Imagine walking into a foreign place to listen to a speaker you do not know. You take your place in the back and pray that nobody acknowledges you. As you scan the room, you notice the diversity of the audience. The room is filled with strangers of all ages ranging from 30 years to 50 years while you are a senior in high school, who had a few friends that tagged along. In spite of your few friends, the audience consists of four white males and 12 females, one of which is African American and another that is in a wheelchair. To your surprise, the featured speaker of the night happens to be the woman in the wheelchair. You are intrigued and ready to hear what she has to say. As a speaker, Deiete was rather hard to understand throughout her speech, for she had a speech impediment. Her speech impediment made it difficult to determine what she was trying to say. For example, when she was giving her introduction, the audience was trying to listen, but the words were slurred and unclear; however, as the speech moved along, it became a little easier to decipher what she was saying. Aside from the speech impediment, she laughed multiple times throughout her speech. For instance, she laughed when she said words, such as nincompoop and naked. She would also laugh at herself while she was talking about her main points which made it difficult to hear and understand what she was saying. The first strength being her organizational pattern which made the speech easy for the audience to follow. She decided to use a topical organizational pattern for her speech. Although she used the most common type of organization, she used it in a creative way, for she made her speech into a metaphor. She referred to her life as a filing cabinet at the end of her introduction which also previewed her key ideas. Throughout the body, she would move from one main point to the next by closing the file she had just discussed and opening a new file to talk about her next point.
