How successful was the Delian League ?

The Delian League was first formed around 478 BCE, this was right after the Greeks succeeded against the Persians in the battles of Marathon, Salamis, and Plataea (Cartwright, 2016). The formation of this confederation was led by Athens, all city-states were invited to join (Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2015), the idea was to keep a strong alliance between Greek cities, that would be able to be prepared and protected Ancient Greece from another possible attacked from Persia.

The Alliance was composed of mostly coastal and city-states surrounded by Aegean sea, nonetheless in grew in number with participation from ancient Greek regions such as in Ionia, the Hellespont, and Propontis. In time, it is recorded that over 300 cities were part of the league and “the majority of states were from Ionia and the islands but most parts of Greece were represented and later there were even some non-Greek members such as the Carian city-states” (Cartwright, 2016).
