Clique of the Southern Belles: There’s over half a million girls in sororities today. Sororities and fraternities have been around for over a century. In fact, the first fraternity is the same age as the United States of America. Their history can’t be covered in one singular essay, as there’s far too much to know. Although sororities are a subculture of themselves, they trickle into multiple smaller subcultures- one of those being Delta Zeta. Delta Zeta is a group filled with strong college-aged women from all across the country. They have an entire culture of their own, full of trends, traditions, sisterhood, and morals that will last a lifetime. Personally, I pass sorority houses every day when I drive through town. These groups of girls are quite prominent in today's society, but we fail to realize how long sorority girls have existed. According to the official Delta Zeta site, “Alfa Lloyd, Mary Collins, Anna Keen, Julia Bishop, Mabelle Minton, and Anne Simmons sought to create something special—a sorority based upon the noble principles of friendship, scholarship, and service (‘About Delta Zeta Sorority’)”. These six women developed an entire sorority on their own, and in 1902 Delta Zeta was founded. What started with six girls has expanded astronomically over the years, “Over 120 years later, Delta Zeta has impacted the lives of over 285,000 alumnae and collegiate members (‘About Delta Zeta Sorority’)” The numbers prove how influential and impactful Delta Zeta, along with all other sororities, is. Over the years, the organization, friendships, and lessons have touched 285,000 lives through Delta Zeta and they plan to continue impacting lives. “Love that is ever steadfast”, is the motto that the women of Delta Zeta live
