Upon acceptance into UWI, I was differed for one year. Disappointed and depressed I later decided to utilize my time by working as a Dental Assistant for which I later hired as. Initially, it was exciting and full of learning opportunities which was afforded to me by my boss, Dr. Ross, but later he taught me what qualities and the type of person I should thrive to become. This was my first job, so like anyone else I was very eager to participate, help and be someone who my boss depends upon. Cross contamination and patient care were the two most important aspects of a dental practice as instructed by Dr. Ross. His patient care was impressive. As the days turned into weeks, I learnt most aspects of being a dental assistant, which included sterilization, scrubbing of instruments, patient care, taking X-rays, restocking of supplies and suctioning during procedures. One month into the job and the niceties had begun to wear off. Condescension and arrogance became a part of my freshly minted job description. This serious lack of basic humanity was not acceptable in a health care professional. To be without care or concern for others is not a quality that any person should have, much less a doctor. I had learnt what many still don’t even understand. Ethics and integrity are important qualities that are required to supplement education.
This experience has only motivated me to become a doctor. Dr. Ross, unknowingly showed me exactly the type of doctor that I would like to be soon. I shall emulate and share what I have learnt in my short time working with Dr. Ross with everyone I interact with in the dental polyclinic and my fellow students so that more medical professionals can understand what it means to care for patients rather than just treating their presenting
