This demonstration was used often during Sunday school and Vacation Bible School to illustrate the concept of both our imperfectness and salvation. While it did help visualize salvation, the unanswered question in the back of my mind remained: “What are we being saved from?” What is in that Canyon? Third we will discuss the significance of depravity.
What is the meaning of the depravity? According to Merriam Webster Dictionary depravity means having the quality or state of being corrupt, evil, or perverted and depraved. This simple definition flatly denies culture’s assertion that man is essentially good. Actor Patton Oswalt reasoned in a facebook post after the Boston marathon bombing that “We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago." Others have cited human’s ability to empathize, love and form friendships to prove that humans are indeed good if freed from bad influences.
The Christian view of total depravity, however is radically different, which leads me to my second point. The Bible states in Isaiah 64:6, “We have all become like one who is unclean, “They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. Romans 1:29 says They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice.
