Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss had been staged in the rococo style which followed the scenery and costume of the first performance by Alfred Roller. While other major operas by composers like Mozart, Wagner, and Verdi have been staged with new concepts at earliest since the 1920s and mostly since 1945, the dominance of the original staging of Der Rosenkavalier was weakened only after the end of the twentieth century. Since then, directors seek to direct this opera in different ways. However, even today, it is an important assumption, how a new production can give up the concept of the original performance in the rococo style and how it can transform elements of the directions of the first performance of the modern form. However, there are less scholarly articles about this opera until today. This paper discusses what tendencies productions of Der Rosenkavalier have. First, the meaning of these motives in the original libretto and Regiebuch (direction book) is described as an assumption of modern productions. Second, selected today's productions are analyzed. Four productions are here mainly discussed with comparison with each other: Herbert Wernicke (Salzburg 1995), Peter Konwitschny (Hamburg 2002), Stefan Herheim (Stuttgart 2009). They are not only important modern productions for this opera but also common to the point that they used at least two of those three motives as important motives which had different meanings from the original Libretto and Regiebuch. In the end, the relationship of these three motifs is discussed.There are many different productions of Der Rosenkavalier today, but I chose three productions because I could get materials like videos, programs, reviews and these three motives are especially good
